Nakumbuka day is not widely known, but it is a day of observance of the Maafa - The African slavery holocaust.

PASA honored Nakumbuka day during the November 11 general meeting. Students were invited to write down who it was they remembered and honored who was affected by the slave trade, be it an individual from history or from their own lives. However, students were also invited to remember those who contributed to the racial narrative in a way that impacted them, as well as those who were affected by other situations or events of violence. or racial discord, or tragedy.

Here were some of their responses:

"I remember Nelson Mandela. Who he was, what he stood for, and who he inspires me to be,"

"I choose to remember the people who lost their lives trying to protect their RIGHTFUL homes."

"The slaves of the glorified Founding Fathers"

"I choose to remember the enslaved women who were sexually assaulted by slavemasters"

"I remember Tupac's legacy of education.

"I remember Paul"

"I remember Emmett Till"

"I remember Fred Hampton because of the Black Panther Party"

"I remember those that were incarcerated & that died in the Ethiopian Revolution of 1974 (the reason my parents came to the US in the 1970s"

"I remember... The few African American men and women who didn't give up on their education even in the midst of discrimination in slowly desegregating schools"

"I remember HURRICANE KATRINA & Malcom X"

"I remember those who are losing their lives trying to escape from bad situations in their home countries only to be rejected and killed in the places they look to for refuge. Those in North Africa trying to go to Europe and Israel and South America only to be returned to things they thought they escaped. Those losing their lives in the sea, in the desert, in the camps, in the prisons and so many more"

"I remember Bob Marley"

"I remember the Eritrean/Ethiopians who died in the Mediterranean Sea"

"I remember Harriet Tubman who exemplified courage"

"I remember the people who risked/lost their lives in the fight to get black people the right to vote"
